About

History that refuses to end

historicjots publishes one story a day about the surviving oddities of the human record: ceremonies still performed long after anyone remembers why, offices and laws that were never repealed, landmarks with strange biographies, festivals, and the documents that began it all. It is the companion to @historicjots on Instagram.

We write essays, not fact cards. Every story is pinned in the atlas where it happened, or where it is happening still.

How we check

Every story is researched with AI assistance and checked against at least two independent, reputable sources before it is published. Those sources are listed at the foot of each story with the date they were checked. Where the record is thin, or a tradition rests on legend, we say so. If you find an error, tell us and we will correct it.

The photographs

Every photograph is real, attributed and freely licensed: public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA, mostly from Wikimedia Commons. Photographer, source and licence appear beside every image. Images are resized to WebP; ShareAlike images keep their ShareAlike licence. Stories in the On Location series use our own photographs. We never use AI-generated imagery.

The atlas and your privacy

Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap contributors. We do not ask for your location and run no advertising or tracking.
